The School for Performing Arts & Creative Education, known as S.P.A.C.E. is the new home for creative and cultural activities at the Corio campus of Geelong Grammar School. The focus of the venue is around two different types of performance space, a 284 seat contemporary black box theatre, known as the Bracebridge Wilson Studio and a 1000 seat flat floor multi-purpose hall, known as the David Darling Playhouse. Both spaces have retractable seating systems to allow various staging and performance formats. The two venues are served by shared facilities including foyer, toilets, change rooms, store rooms, as well as accommodation for the Drama Department with multi-purpose studio, drama classrooms, rehearsal and green room spaces. The main foyer has been designed as an interactive learning space when not in performance mode to serve the school’s creative education program.
“…the theatre typologies contained within have been expertly conceived to cleverly meander between flexibility and function in an astute response to the needs of contemporary pedagogy and theatre.AIA Education Jury, 2016
