  • In 1997, RMIT University acquired the former Police Garage along with the City Watch House and Magistrate’s Court. The integration of the vacated legal precinct into the main campus was an important stage of the Urban Spaces Project which commenced in 1996. Once a barrier to the east, RMIT now connected directly through to Russell Street. Alumni Courtyard provides a major new piece of open space for the university and wider community. The courtyard bounded by the original bluestone walls of the Old Melbourne Gaol, has been designed as a large flexible green space. It also incorporates numerous items of archaeological significance exposed during the construction process. Alumni courtyard is not only a place to rediscover a hidden part of Melbourne’s heritage, but a new venue for learning, performance and casual relaxation
